- <p> DIED. C.L. SULZBERGER, 80, journalist; in New York City. A member
- of the New York Times publishing family, Sulzberger served as
- a foreign correspondent and commentator for almost 40 years,
- beginning in 1939. After covering World War II from more than
- 30 countries, Sulzberger--his initials stood for Cyrus Leo--became the Times' chief foreign correspondent, covering the
- cold war with an amazing array of contacts in Eastern Europe.
- His dispatches from Yugoslavia won a special Pulitzer Prize
- citation in 1951, and three years later, he started his "Foreign
- Affairs" column in the Times. Sulzberger not only covered news,
- he made it: in The Last of the Giants, one of two dozen books,
- he revealed that in 1961 he carried a message from Soviet leader
- Nikita Khrushchev to President John F. Kennedy.
